The United States’ education system has been the subject of sharp criticism in recent years, as it continues to fail many students. Despite decades-long efforts to improve equity and access in the classroom, there is still a pronounced achievement gap among various student populations. This can be attributed to both systemic failures in our approach to teaching, as well as inadequate resources within schools that often come from underfunded districts. As we move forward, it is clear that changes need to be made in order for our education system to serve all learners. Especially now, with so many students learning from home due to the pandemic, solutions must be put into place that guarantee each student receives the quality education they deserve. It is only then that we can make sure all children have equal opportunities for success regardless of their background or circumstances.
There is a lot of inequality in the education system, with some students getting a much better education than others
In much of the world, there is a wide disparity between students in terms of the education they receive. Students from more privileged backgrounds tend to have access to more resources and better teaching, which puts them at an immediate advantage, widening the divide that already exists because of circumstances outside of school, such as socioeconomic status. This inequality hurts everybody, as it makes fewer opportunities available for those from disadvantaged backgrounds and keeps inequality alive throughout subsequent generations. It’s obviously not fair to those poor and marginalized who don’t get the same level of attention and educational opportunity; the situation remains deeply concerning. To change this scenario we need to put pressure on government officials to fund higher quality schools in poorer areas, in addition to enacting various policy initiatives that will create a more equitable playing field while developing an educated citizenry that benefits everyone.

With the lack of job security and changing economic trends brought about by globalization, learning institutions are failing to teach valuable survival skills. The emphasis on rote memorization does not equip students with the knowledge of how to be agile when encountering unfamiliar or less commonly taught topics, respond to tight deadlines and overcome unexpected problems that come up in life. A lot of college graduates find themselves drowning in debt with degrees that won’t get jobs that pay enough to cover expenses. In order for our next generations to adequately survive in a quickly changing world, a fundamental restructuring of our education system is needed now.
College is becoming too expensive for many people to afford
College tuition continues to rise year after year, making it increasingly difficult for many families to afford the cost of higher education. Despite the promise that comes with a college degree, the burden of debt for many has become too great to bear. Unfortunately, this trend of college becoming out-of-reach does not seem to show any sign of slowing down anytime soon. Meanwhile, everyday people are having to make nearly impossible sacrifices so their children can secure the future they deserve and attend their dream schools. With the rising cost of college presenting an undeniable financial barrier to so many, immediate action must be taken by university leaders if access to higher education is going to remain a viable option for all.
The standards for graduation are too low and need to be raised
Graduation is a time to celebrate the hard work and dedication that one has put into their studies, but when the standards for graduation are low, it can make this special occasion a lot less meaningful. It’s understandable that schools must accommodate for students with varying learning abilities, but there is always room to improve the standard of education. Raising the graduation standards would help ensure that students not only understand basic concepts and skills necessary for success, but can also communicate them effectively through essays and class presentations. When this happens, graduates can walk away from their school experience with more confidence and be more prepared for playing an important role in society.
Teachers are not given enough support or resources to be effective
It is essential to provide teachers with adequate support and resources to ensure effective instruction, yet often times this is not the case. It has been said that teachers are the backbone of any school system, yet far too many lack the necessary tools to do their job properly. With new technologies and increasingly larger classrooms, it is more important now than ever before for teachers to have access to the right resources in order to create an effective learning environment. From instructional materials and teaching aides, to classroom supplies and state of the art technology – without proper support, our teachers can not provide a quality education experience or meet their students’ needs. It is up to administrators and legislators to ensure that every teacher has access to what they need in order to be successful
