A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the
brain is suddenly interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain
bursts, spilling blood into the spaces surrounding brain cells. In the
same way that a person suffering a loss of blood flow to the heart is
said to be having a heart attack, a person with a loss of blood flow to
the brain or sudden bleeding in the brain can be said to be having a
"brain attack."

Stroke: Cause

Describe the neuroanatomy of stroke. Explain the
key determinants of cerebral perfusion. Explain what happens
during the ischemic cascade. Describe the difference between
ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. List the most common causes of
ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes in children and in adults over
65 years old. List three modifiable and non-modifiable risk
factors for ischemic strokes in the older population.
Stroke: Diagnosis

Stroke is the sudden onset of neurological
symptoms caused by cerebral ischemia (ischemic stroke) or
hemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke). The symptoms include sudden
numbness or weakness (usually on one side of the body), visual
impairment, loss of balance or coordination, and difficulty
speaking or comprehending speech. This course will provide you
with the background you need to understand the evaluation of
patients with neurological symptoms, and the diagnostic tests
used in assessment.
Stroke: Treatment

This course discusses prognoses for the different
types of stroke, and the treatment options available to
patients. |

Strokes can affect a person's ability to speak, see,
move, and think. Strokes may even cause death. In fact, they are the
third leading killer in the United States. And they are the leading
cause of disability in adults.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the
brain is interrupted.
Stroke Care
A stroke can happen to anyone at any moment. For many
years, there was no hope for those suffering a stroke. However, recent
breakthroughs have led to new treatments for those who have a stroke.
