RQWQCQ is a good strategy to use when solving math word problems. Each of the letters in RQWQCQ stands for a step in the strategy.
Word problems often trip up even the best math students. Many get stumped trying to figure out what they're looking to solve. Without knowing what's being asked, students have trouble making sense of all the critical information in the question.
Most people are good problem solvers in their everyday life. However, when it comes to mathematics, most people think of word problems. Almost universally, students do not like or understand word problems. Former students remember them with dread. And yet it is important in the study of mathematics to develop a problem-solving approach.
A word problem in algebra is the equivalent of a story problem in math. When you solved story problems in your math class you had to decide what information you had and what you needed to find out. Then you decided what operation to use. Addition was used to find a totals and subtraction was used to find changes in values.
