Fundamentals of Petroleum Refining
This course has been developed to provide a brief
overview of the function and interrelationship of the petroleum
refinery fuels processes most commonly found in modern petroleum
refineries. These processes refine petroleum crude oils into the
literally hundreds of specification petroleum products, many of
which we use on a daily basis. Refinery fuels processes fall
into several broad categories: Fractionation (distillation),
Treating and Upgrading. This course is applicable to all
engineering disciplines. Upon successful completion of this
course, the student will have achieved a basic understanding of
what occurs inside a modern petroleum refinery. Furthermore, the
student will learn how the most common refinery fuels processes
accomplish the refining of crude oils into the fuels
specification products that the markets demand. - 3 PDH

Processing Natural Gas
Natural gas, as it is used by consumers, is much
different from the natural gas that is brought from underground up to
the wellhead. Although the processing of natural gas is in many respects
less complicated than the processing and refining of crude oil, it is
equally as necessary before its use by end users.
Refining Gas & Oil
There are hundreds of products and by-products of crude
oil which are separated and refined at an oil refinery. A combination of
physical separation and chemical conversion processes are used to create
products with the correct odour, colour, stability and other
specifications required by the market.
Where Does the Oil Go After the Well?
Because oil is made up of many different components, oil
is refined to separate the various useful products it contains.
Fractionation is usually done by distillation, where the oil is heated
until the lighter components boil off. Vapors are then collected,
Processing Crude Oil - Refining
Crude oil is a complicated mixture of hydrocarbons, with
a varying composition depending on its source. The hydrocarbons in crude
oil have different boiling points, according to the number of carbon
atoms their molecules contain and how they are arranged.
