In Search of a Back-up Strategy
A backup strategy is exactly the same as an insurance policy. First, you need to define what risks you want to be protected against. Are you ready to lose some of your data? What do you fear most?

What to backup and how many tapes will be required.

When starting at a new site or taking over a database you have not been involved with, It is common and usually at very short notice that you have to take a backup, supply a list of files to be backed up or to ensure that all the appropriate file are being backed up.

What's in a storage clause? ( maxextents & pctincrease ) .

In the early days of Oracle Financials, Oracle, when installing Financials claimed they did not know what block size a database would be using or the size of the database. So Oracle used defaults of 50% increase and maxextents of 999 or 9999 for nearly all Financials objects ( in the very early releases MPL5 all objects were placed in the system tablespace ).
