AutoFilter - Filter to Match Selection

Microsoft Excel AutoFilter ButtonYou may quickly see all the records in the same column that match a selection by clicking the AutoFilter button on the toolbar.

If the AutoFilter Button is not found on the toolbar, follow the directions below to add it.

Make sure that AutoFilter is shut off - Data>Filter>uncheck AutoFilter.

• Select a cell in the database (ie. A20 Harney Peak Trail System)

• Click the AutoFilter Button

The records that do not contain Harney Peak Trail System in column A are hidden.  Notice that the AutoFilter drop box arrows have appeared next to each of the headings.

Redisplay the whole database.  Data>Filter>Show All

Turn AutoFilter off Data>Filter>uncheck AutoFilter

Once you get the hang of using AutoFilters to perform filters, it'll most likely not be long before you'll want to apply criteria to multiple columns in filtering the database.  Advanced Filters make this possible, they are covered next.

To add the AutoFilter Button to the toolbar

• Click View on the Menu Bar

• Hover Toolbars & click Customize - the Customize dialog box appears.

• Click the Commands tab

• Click Data in the left hand box

• Scroll down to AutoFilter in the right box

Click and Drag (with the mouse button down) the AutoFilter Button out of the dialog box and up onto the tool bar next to the undo button. Release the mouse button & Close the Customize dialog box.
